Philipp Sieger’s research focuses on two main areas. In the first one, he examines the antecedents and outcomes of new venture creation. In the second one, he investigates how established (family) firms can remain entrepreneurial and successful over time. His work has been published in renowned journals such as Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Business Venturing, and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. Philipp Sieger also serves as an Associate Editor of Family Business Review and leads the global GUESSS research project on student entrepreneurship.
His teaching portfolio includes various entrepreneurship-related courses, such as Being an Entrepreneur and Corporate Entrepreneurship, which have received several awards. Philipp Sieger also lectures in executive education programs and actively engages in practice-oriented outreach activities.
He earned his PhD on success factors in family firms from the University of St.Gallen in 2011. He was appointed Assistant Professor there in 2012 and completed his postdoctoral thesis (Habilitation) on Entrepreneurship in Family Firms and Beyond in 2016. Research visits took him to Northeastern University (USA, 2012), Jonkoping University (Sweden, 2013), and the University of Bergamo (Italy, 2015). In 2016, he joined the University of Bern as an Assistant Professor (Tenure Track), was promoted to Associate Professor in 2018, and to Full Professor in 2025.
